***A note about the writing process steps*** While we believe that writing is a process, we stress to our writers that the process is frequently non-linear. Writers may find they need to return to a previous step before they can move forward through the process. A writer in the revision step, for instance, realizes that a point in the paper is not well supported. After brainstorming additional support and drafting a new paragraph, the writer may return to revising the paper. The best writers know that the secret to great writing is rewriting, and no one creates a perfect draft on the first try. The understanding that writing is a process and that returning to previous steps in the process is not only possible, but highly advisable, is probably the most important concept we teach at the Writing Center.
