Appointments & Walk-ins

We accept both appointments and walk-ins at the Writing Center. Writers who have made an appointment will be taken before those who walk in, however. To ensure that you get a session, we recommend making an appointment by calling us at (409) 880-8571, e-mailing us at UWC@my.lamar.edu, or stopping by Maes 208 to schedule a session in our appointment book. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind about appointments:

Please be on time for your appointment; we will take a walk-in if the scheduled writer is more than 5 minutes late for a session.
Appointments may last anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour.
If you make an appointment by e-mail, please list three times you would be available, and we will write back to let you know if we have an opening during that time. This e-mail is your confirmation of an appointment. If you do not receive an e-mail within 24 hours, call us at 880-8571. (We close early on Fridays and are closed for the weekend, so there is no one available to check e-mail at this time.)
When scheduling an appointment, please be aware that we schedule for the top of the hour (e.g. 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, etc.). If you plan to arrive at, say, 12:30, please make a note of that in the appointment book or when scheduling via phone or e-mail. Also, be aware that if you sign up at 12:30, we only guarantee you a 30-minute session so that someone else can sign up for the 1:00 slot. Therefore, if you think you may need the whole 60 minutes, we recommend scheduling at the top of the hour.
If someone else has already signed up for the time you want, don't worry: we take stand-bys! A stand-by will be taken if the appointment does not show up. Stand-bys are also taken before walk-ins. Look for the stand-by slot in the appointment book.
You may sign up for up to 2 appointments at a time, though we do ask that you limit your appointments to no more than 1 per day and 2 per week.
If you need to cancel, please call to let us know or stop by and erase your name from the appointment book.
