The Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities (TALH) is a highly selective, dual enrollment residential high school for gifted and talented students eager for an enriched intellectual program enhanced by the disciplines of the humanities. The Academy is one of only two residential programs for gifted and talented high school students recognized by the Texas State Legislature.
Academy students fulfill their junior and senior high school requirements by taking university classes and thereby earn college credit as well. Though academic achievement is firmly at the center of the Academy's mission, Academy students are expected to cultivate their leadership abilities by investing a portion of their out-of -class/study time in volunteer organizations, community service, and in activities and programs sponsored by the Academy. The ultimate aim of the program is simple: to cultivate the intellectual and ethical virtues of our state and nation's future leaders.
By earning a TALH diploma, Academy graduates have demonstrated that in respect to the fundamentals of leadership, they possess:
- Intelligence: Students earn and maintain high GPA's and exemplary SAT scores.
- Responsibility: Our graduates have successfully lived two years away from home within a community of peers in a university residence hall.
- Scholastic Commitment: Our graduates have completed four semesters of a major university's classes before most of their hometown peers graduate twelfth grade.
- Social Skills: Our graduates gain experience in dealing successfully with a wide variety of individuals and beliefs and regularly take leadership roles in Academy and university affairs.
- A Mindset for the Future: Our graduates benefit from positive and real education in what it means to be a compassionate leader through TALH's humanities program and service projects.
Our students have been accepted to the nation’s finest colleges and universities including
Ivy League schools like Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Mount Holyoke, and Smith; the South’s best
like Duke, Washington and Lee , Vanderbilt, and Tulane; powerhouses like the Universities of
Chicago, New York, Stanford, and Southern California; the United States Service Academies,
and Texas’ most reputed institutions—both public and private -- like Rice, UT, A&M, and Trinity.
This year our graduates garnered 2.6 million dollars in scholarships. We have a record number of presidential scholars and one Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar.
