Welcome Letter
Dear Participant,
Welcome to the Global Studies and Study Abroad webpage. If you have decided either to enroll in a Lamar University-sponsored program or to take part in one of a variety of other study abroad programs, you should consider several important issues while planning your trip.
First, talk to other students who have attended courses overseas; their experiences might give you an idea about the many cultural similarities and differences that you are likely to encounter. If you choose to participate in a Lamar University faculty-led program, be certain to attend the orientation meetings offered by the department sponsoring the program; furthermore, try to find out as much as you can about your foreign destination by reviewing the State Department website at www.travel.state.gov . This website will be your guide for: Passport Information, Country Specific Information, Travel Warnings, Current Travel Alerts, and International Travel Safety Information for Students. Be cautioned that a study abroad program may be cancelled as result events beyond anyones control, such as natural disasters, political tensions, or other short-term situations that pose imminent risks to the safety of U.S. citizens.
Regardless of how exciting the intended venture might, personal reasons also might lead a student to cancel his or her participation in a study-abroad program. Thus, applicants should consider purchasing travel insurance as a means for recovering costs related to pre-travel expenses that already have been paid. To avoid a financial loss, search for a coverage that best suits your travel itinerary and that guarantees the recovery of at least some of your trip costs. Any tuition you have paid to a Lamar University-sponsored program will be returned in compliance with our stated refund policies. It is important to note that any tuition already paid to the host university or already-spent program expenses cannot be completely recovered. Even cancelling ahead of time, you still could lose some money, especially since refunds are affected by fluctuations in the exchange rate of the dollar.
Remember, through careful planning you will be one step closer to seeing the world and experiencing other cultures.
With Regards,
