First Advising Session

Welcome to STARS Academic Advising! We are glad to have you, and look forward to your first visit.

You might hear about our office from a variety of places- your departmental advisor, a professor, a phone call from a STARS advisor, a letter that is mailed to you, or maybe even this website. When you first find out you are on probation or are referred as an Early Alert student, make an appointment as soon as possible. You can do so by calling us at 409-880-7201 or by coming in to our office in Communication 109.

Bring with you your degree plan, your course catalog, any previous academic action plan, a list of classes you’d like to take next semester, and any questions or concerns to discuss with your advisor.

When you arrive for your appointment, please sign in at the front desk and let our administrative assistant know you are here for an advising appointment. You will be given some forms to fill out before you see your advisor. These forms give your advisor some information about you and how we will be able to help you. During your first advising visit, you will meet your advisor, learn about probation and its implications, discuss courses for the next semester, and develop a Contract for Academic Success. This process will help you to plan for your future at Lamar and connect you with the resources and habits you will need to be successful and return to good academic standing.

This first visit is just the beginning of your STARS journey. Your advisor and the rest of the STARS staff will support you for the rest of your time on probation. We hope to see you often through periodic follow-up visits and will monitor your progress to ensure that you are progressing and upholding your Contract for Academic Success.
