What is AAMP:

African American Male Professional Connections Program is designed for African-American male students at Lamar University. This program provides professional networking, mentoring, Academic Enhancement Workshops, goal setting, professional development, leadership skills, professional communications, and money management.

Facts:

  • Black students graduate (over six years) at a rate roughly 18% lower than White students (Vincent Tinto, July 2004).
  • A bachelor's degree adds about $1,266,000 to a male's lifetime income compared to the income of a male high school graduate (Census Bureau).
  • More black men 17 years and older are behind bars than enrolled in colleges or universities (F. Butterfield, August 28, 2002, New York Times).

Benefits of participating in the AAMP program:

  • Having an AAMP mentor who is genuinely concerned about your personal and professional development
  • Having an AAMP mentor who will model professional behavior
  • Having an AAMP mentor who will listen to your concerns as they relate to your academics
