SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

How do faculty members know a student needs academic adjustments or accommodations?

Faculty are not required to provide academic adjustments or accommodations to students that do not present an accommodation memorandum from the Services for Students with Disabilities (SFSWD) Director. If a student makes such a request without an accommodation memorandum, faculty should refer the student to the SFSWD Director, Wimberly 101, 409-880-8347, callie.trahan@lamar.edu.

Each semester students with disabilities are given accommodation memorandums to give to each of their instructors. These students are told to meet with their instructors during the first week of class, during the instructor’s office hours, to submit the accommodation memorandums. This meeting gives the student and instructor time to discuss the needed accommodations in a private setting.

Below are only a few issues that a student and instructor will need to discuss:

* is the instructor or SFSWD going to administer any assigned testing accommodations?
* where should the sign langu age interpreter stand so that effective communication is provided in the classroom?
* day/time any tests will be administered, it the test must be administered at a time other than regular class time.
* options on the provision of a note taker. Is the student going to ask someone or will the instructor need to ask for a volunteer?
* how to use the microphone for an assistive listening device.
Remember, the SFSWD Director is always available to answer questions or address concerns of instructors.
