Requesting/Receiving Academic Adjustments and/or

Accommodations at Lamar University

Make an appointment to meet the SFSWD Director located in the Communications Building Room 105 by calling 409-880-8347 or emailing SFSWD@lamar.edu

At the meeting you will:

    * fill out / sign Intake Form

    * present Documentation of Disability

    * discuss functional limitations, previous accommodations-what worked/did not work

Documentation Staffing:

     * The SFSWD Director meets with three other disability service professionals to
review the reports submitted by each student.

     * The reports are objectively evaluated to determine eligibility
(as defined by the American's With Disabilities Act of 1990), and establish that all the necessary
information is included (current report, diagnosis, functional limitations, etc.).

Assignment of Academic Adjustments and/or Accommodations:

     * Once a disability is established, the functional limitations of the individual are evaluated.  If  appropriate,
the student is assigned reasonable academic adjustments and/or accommodations that assure access to the
university's academic activities, programs, and services.

Accommodation Memorandums:

     * At least one week before each semester qualified students are e-mailed accommodation memos.
Students are responsible to print out the required number of memos and then distribute to appropriate faculty.
It is best to meet with faculty in their office sometime during  the first week of classes. How accommodations
will be provided should be discussed at this meeting.

Faculty/SFSWD work together to provide SWD access to academic activities, programs and services.  Some possible academic adjustments/accommodations are:

    * testing accommodations-extended time, reduced distraction environment, use of computer / calculator, accessible format, and mark test instead
      of scantron

    * accessible format-enlarged print, Braille, CD, e-text, and/or tape recorded handouts, tests, and/or textbooks

       RFB&D CD’s, and translates/prints into Braille
