- File a written request for a certification (deficiency) plan in ED 201H. To do this, you must:
- Show evidence of Bachelor's degree conferred
- Present an official transcript for evaluation
- Pay the appropriate fee at the time the request is made
- Show evidence of a 2.5 overall grade point average on a 4-point system on all university and college course work previously taken
- Meet with Post Baccalaureate Advisor for initial advising conference
- Receive post baccalaureate certification program policies and procedures
- Receive initial pre-deficiency plan advising form
- For EC-4 Generalist and 4-8 Generalist:
- Receive deficiency plan guidelines
- Receive testing schedule and sign up for test in Room 118
- Receive profile sheet when ready in Room 118
- EC-4 Generalist - must score 75% or better to have no deficiencies
- 4-8 Generalist - must score 75% or better to have no deficiencies
- Call for an appointment with advisor and bring profile sheet to have plan finalized

THEA Requirement:
- You must show evidence of having passed the THEA in all three areas either prior to admission into the program or during the first fall, spring or summer semester in which you are enrolled.
- Minimum scores required for admission into the program:
- Reading: 230
- Writing: 220
- Math: 230
- After your first semester of coursework, if the appropriate scores are not submitted, you will not be allowed to enroll in any additional courses until the THEA requirement has been met. All post baccalaureate classes are monitored for compliance with THEA policy.

Requirements Following Entry into Post Baccalaureate Certification Program:
- You must make a “B” or better in all courses taken for certification. If less than a “B” is earned in any course, the course must be retaken. Competencies are taught in each course and making a “C” or lower in a course is evidence that the competencies have not been mastered.
Sequence in Which Professional Development Courses Should Be Taken:
- Pedagogy (PEDG) courses must be taken in the following order:
- PEDG 5330 – Effective Teaching
- PEDG 5387 – Reading at the Elementary School Level or PEDG 5375 – Content Area Reading
- PEDG 5388 – Professional Roles and Responsibilities
- PEDG 5350 – The Learning Process
- PEDG 5345 – Instructional Design and Assessment of Academic Achievement
- PEDG 5330 (Effective Teaching) must be taken during your first semester of coursework.
- PEDG 5345 (Instructional Design and Assessment of Academic Achievement) must be taken during the last semester of pedagogy coursework. It may be taken concurrently with the internship.
- Students enrolled in PEDG 5345 must have passed Content Proficiency Exam I-A or I-B (or have previously taken) all appropriate TExES qualifying exams (PPR and content area). Failure to fulfill this course requirement will result in an incomplete “I” for the course.
TExES Policies and Procedures:
- All students are required to take the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities TExES exam to be certified in the state of Texas.
- The TExES exams are as follows:
- EC-4 certification: Must take Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-4
- 4-8 certification: Must take Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities 4-8
- 8-12 certification: Must take Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities 8-12 in each teaching field in which they wish to become certified.
- EC-12 certification: Must take Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 in each teaching field in which they wish to become certified.
- Special Education endorsement requires an additional TExES exam.

GPA Requirements for Certification:
- A 2.5 GPA is required for certification in the following areas:
- Overall 2.5 GPA in all undergraduate coursework
- Overall 2.5 GPA in teaching field(s) undergraduate
- Overall 3.0 GPA in Professional Development coursework and all other graduate level coursework taken for certification
Certification Requirements:
- You must apply online with SBEC website – www.sbec.state.tx.us
- You must fill out and turn in completed “Application for Certification” to the Certification Office in Room 106 of the Education Building
General Information:
- Deficiency plans are not updated.
- No refunds after deficiency plan has been developed.
- Deficiency plans are valid for 3 years. After that time, if a plan is not complete, then a new plan will have to be written.
- State Board for Educator Certification will require all first-time applicants for an initial credential to be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check. For more information, log onto SBEC’s website @ www.sbec.state.tx.us.
- Advisement is required before registering for coursework each semester.
- Only ONE TExES exam is allowed per Administration.
- Must be bar coded for all TExES exam(s) by Lamar University before you can be recommended for certification.
