Why is voter turnout in the United States so low compared with that in other Western democracies? Many experts feel that the present system of campaigns, elections, and election laws has caused mass disillusionment, which discourages voter participation. Campaign and Election Reform gathers a wealth of information about attempts to reform the electoral process. The authors discuss such political circumstances as party corruption and excessive campaign donations. Emphasis is placed on the various explanations for continued low voter turnout rates and suggested changes in the electoral system that may increase citizen participation. Glenn H. Utter is a professor and chair of the Political Science Department at Lamar University. He is co-author of ABC-CLlO's award-winning The Religious Right. Ruth Ann Strickland, Ph.D., is an associate professor of political science at Appalachian State University. |
