Lamar theatre food drive a success

11/26/2008

The Southeast Texas Food Bank provides food for approximately 200,000 meals each month.  They provide a vital community service because one in every four children in Texas lives in poverty, and 15 percent of the elderly in Southeast Texas live in poverty.  Due to the devastation of Hurricane Ike this past September, the Food Bank’s pantry was depleted, endangering its ability to provide for people in need in our community.

The faculty of Lamar’s theatre department wanted to do something to help out, so for the recent production of The Little Dog Laughed, Lamar Theatre accepted non-perishable food donations in lieu of payment for tickets.  By the end of the show’s six-day run, the team had collected 793 pounds of food, which will feed more than 460 people in Southeast Texas.

Lamar University theatre students and box office staff Hannah Harper, Dee Dee Howell and Sallie Milton (pictured above with Obie Stagg, product recovery supervisor at the Southeast Texas Food Bank) delivered the food along with theatre faculty member Lynae Sanford.

The Southeast Texas Food Bank accepts monetary and food donations from the community.  Visit them online at www.setxfoodbank.org for information on conducting a similar food and fund drive.  For volunteer information, please call (409) 838-8777.
