Lamar University to use new marketing tagline

Lamar University has adopted a new tagline – Texas Roots. Infinite Possibilities. – to reflect the university’s long tradition in the Lone Star State and its mission of providing students with the tools they need for success.

The new tagline — Texas Roots. Infinite Possibilities. — recognizes the university’s commitment to nurturing the aspirations of our students; to engaging students in rigorous academic and meaningful social endeavors essential to a quality education; and to celebrating the achievements of our students and our successful alumni who are making a positive impact in the global marketplace.

The new tagline grew from a commitment made by Lamar University President James Simmons to brand the university with a motto that effectively reflects Lamar’s status as a regional comprehensive university that is continually expanding its reach, influence and prominence.

“We feel we have captured the essence of what we do here at Lamar University,” said Brian Sattler, director of Lamar University public relations.  “This has been a long and challenging process, but ultimately we feel very good about the outcome.”

The tagline evolved from meetings between branding and image consultant Jim Paglia and Lamar University administrative and academic staff members. In March 2007, Paglia and representatives from all LU colleges and administrative areas met to discuss the core values and strengths of the university.  From these intensive focus group discussions came values, mission, vision and brand positioning statements that guided the search for a representative motto.

Focus group discussions with faculty and staff, student groups, alumni and community leaders over several months guided the process of articulating the university’s core values into a concise motto.

The new motto does not replace the existing university star logo or mascot logo that provide graphic identity for the university and its athletic programs, Sattler said.

Graphics of the new tagline are available from the public relations office for use in university, college and departmental publications such as newsletters and brochures.  Contact Larry Acker, assistant director of public relations, at 880-7886 or email larry.acker@lamar.edu for more information.
