Lamar invites public to join in PR Professionals Series

11/7/2008

The Lamar University Department of Communication is hosting its third annual “Public Relations Professionals Series” and inviting the public to share in presentations by public relations professionals for three evenings during the month of November.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in public relations to meet three very different PR practitioners, learn about their backgrounds, the demands they face and the issues they confront daily,” according to Paul Hemenway, professor of communication, who is hosting these guests in his Lamar Introduction to Public Relations class, and opening these special evenings to everyone on campus and in the community.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Art Museum of Southeast Texas Public Relations Coordinator Melissa Tilley will discuss the challenges facing PR in a nonprofit organization.  AMSET recently celebrated its annual Eat A Bug! event at their October Family Arts Day.

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, Dallas PR firm BlueCurrent partner Rob Martin will discuss the challenges facing PR in a boutique agency.  BlueCurrent clients have included Shell Oil, T.G.I. Friday’s, Chili’s, Blockbuster and Dell Computer.

On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Entergy Communications Specialist Debi Derrick will discuss the challenges facing PR in the corporate and utility sectors.  Derrick has served as a spokesperson for Entergy during several of the hurricanes that have visited Southeast Texas.

Guests in the Series will present from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 103 (the theater) of the new Communication Building (formerly the old dining hall), across from the post office and police station on the Lamar University campus in Beaumont.
