Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the purpose of the McNair Scholars Program?
The McNair Scholars Program is designed to help first-generation, low-income, and/or
under-represented students obtain admittance into graduate school.
2) Do I have to conduct research?
No, it is not required to conduct research; however, it is a major component of the McNair Scholars Program.
3) When do I get paid?
You will receive your $2800 stipend, distributed in installments, across the research time frame.
4) How do I pick a mentor?
After acceptance into the program, you may approach a faculty member that has your same interest, or look through our Faculty Mentor Database.
5) Do I have to conduct research in my field of study?
No, you may conduct research in any field that is of interest to you.
6) Do I have to work on the research that my mentor is currently working on?
We would rather you do research in an area that interests you. If you have no particular interest, you may work on what your mentor is interested in doing.
7) How soon do I need to start working on my research?
You are not required to start your research until the spring semester; however, you may begin working earlier if you would like.
8) When do you accept applications?
We have recruitment during the beginning of the fall semester.
9) Other than research, what else is required of me?
Besides the research process, you are also required to attend a series of workshops.
10) How much time is required to participate in the McNair Scholars Program?
We would like for the McNair Scholars Program to be a supplement to school; however, we do conduct a rigorous program that will require dedication on the part of the student.
