None. It is recommended that students purchase a book entitled Therapist's
Guide to Clinical Intervention: The 1-2-3s of Treatment Planning by
Sharon L. Johnson. 2nd Edition.

| Academic Honesty: |
Academic Dishonesty, Misconduct, Discipline Code. Student conduct regulations,
as found in the Lamar University Student Handbook, apply to all
graduate students. These regulations include policies relating to academic
dishonesty, plagiarism, University disciplinary code, and student rights
and responsibilities. It is the responsibility of all graduate students
to read the Student Handbook and to abide by all University regulations

| Drop/Add: |
It is the student's responsibility to make you are officially enrolled
in this course. If, at any point, you decide to drop the class, it is
your responsibility to officially drop. Any student who stops attending
class and does not officially drop the course will be given an "F"
as the semester grade. |
| Course Evaluation: |
Instruction as well as student performance is subject to evaluation.
Academic departments have policies and procedures that will be instituted
near the end of the course. |

| Course Description: |
This course provides field experiences in counseling in an appropriate
school or agency; students spend a minimum of 150 clock hours under supervision
in the delivery of a counseling service. A minimum of 100 clock hours
must be in direct contact. The course is taken twice for a total of 6
hours.The course is taken in the last two semesters of the student's program.

| Practicum Objectives: |
The Practicum is designed to provide the student with experience in
delivering guidance and counseling services under the supervision of a
certified and/or licensed professional provider of guidance and counseling
services or the administrator who supervises counseling services. On completion
of this experience, the Practicum student should be proficient in counseling
skills appropriate to the setting in which the Practicum was completed.
Minimum proficiencies include the ability to:
1. Describe the organizational structure and counseling program of the
school or agency.
2. Assess an individual or group of individuals in terms of guidance/counseling/referral
needs.
3. Provide a written assessment of the individual or group with analysis
and rationale for services/referral needed.
4. Provide the guidance, counseling, consultation, and other related services
to include:
a. establishing a therapeutic relationship
with the individual/group/family,
b. providing guidance/counseling
on an individual/group/family,
c. using assessment data,
and
d. making appropriate referrals according to legal
and ethical guidelines.
5. Determine ways in which the Code of Ethics of the American Counseling
Association applies to the services provided. |
| Course Requirements: |
1. Prior to beginning the Practicum, the student will submit
the following to the instructor:
a. personal data sheet (attachment 1)
b. supervisory agreement (attachment 2)
2. The student will complete a minimum of 150 clock hours of guidance/counseling
activities as assigned by the on-site supervisor. One hundred of the
150 hours must involve direct client contact. Direct client contact
may include educational, vocational, personal, and or interpersonal
guidance/counseling activities involving direct contact with the client
or group of clients. Additional activities may include guidance program
planning, documentation of guidance/counseling activities, consultation
with other professionals and presentations regarding guidance/counseling
programs. Any questions regarding credible guidance/counseling activities
should be addressed to the instructor. The student is expected to work
on the practicum hours throughout the semester and may not document
more than twenty direct contact hours in a given week.
3. Each Practicum Instructor will schedule meetings with students throughout
the semester.
4. Satisfactory course completion will require the student to submit
to the instructor:
a.A log documenting 150 hours of guidance/counseling activities,
signed by the
site supervisor.
b.One written case presentation of services to an Individual
client.
(may be personal, vocational, educational, etc.)
The following information will be included.
1. Referral source.
2. Reason for the referral problem.
3. Intake assessment.
4. Progress notes and outcome.
5. Ethical implications of services provided.
6. Case summary.
c. An evaluation of the Practicum experience.
d. A supervisor evaluation of the Practicum student mailed
to the
University instructor.
5. Abide by the ACA Code of Ethics.
6. Purchase of professional liability insurance is recommended.
