Classroom Management Policies:

Attendance is important and expected at each class meeting. Exams will be given at the scheduled times.

Theories and Strategies in Counseling and Psychotherapy
Authors: James and Gilliland, 5th Edition.

Academic Honesty:

Academic Dishonesty, Misconduct, Discipline Code. Student conduct regulations, as found in the Lamar . University-Beaumont Student Handbook, apply to all graduate students. These regulations include policies relating to academic dishonesty, plagiarism, University disciplinary code, and student rights and responsibilities. It is the responsibility of all graduate students to read the Student Handbook and to abide by all University regulations

Drop/Add:

It is the student's responsibility to make you are officially enrolled in this course. If, at any point, you decide to drop the class, it is your responsibility to officially drop. Any student who stops attending class and does not officially drop the course will be given an "F" as the semester grade.

Course Evaluation:

Instruction as well as student performance is subject to evaluation. Academic departments have policies and procedures that will be instituted near the end of the course.

Course Description:

A study of theories of individual counseling with an emphasis on techniques and applications.

Course Outline:

Session 1

Introduction to course. A review of class outline, requirements and projects. A discussion of the characteristics of the mature personality.

Session 2

History and trends in counseling (Ch. 1). Personal and professional aspects of counseling (Ch. 2). Chapters 3 - 4.(J-G 4)

Session 3

Building a counseling relationship (Ch.5). Working in a counseling relationship (Ch.6). Termination of counseling relationship (Ch.7). (J-G 5)

Session 4

Exam One.

Session 5

Psychoanalytic approaches (Ch.8). Freud, Jung, Rank, Adler, Horney, Chapters 10 - 11. (J-G 2)

Session 6

Continuation of Session 5. (J-G 3)

Session 7

Affective approaches (Ch.8). Rogers, May, Maslow, Jourard, Yalom, Frankl and Perls. Chapters 12 - 13. (J-G 6)

Session 8

Continuation of Session 7. (J-G 9)

Session 9

Exam Two.

Session 10

Cognitive approaches (Ch. 9). Beck, Ellis, Harris, and Berne. Chapters 14-16. (J-G 10)

Session 11

Continuation of Session 10. (J-G 7)

Session 12

Behavioral approaches (Ch.9). Watson, Skinner, Wolpe, Bandura, Krumboltz, Glasser and Lazarus. Chapters 17-19. (J-G 8)

Project:

Write a paper on one of the counseling theories to be discussed in class. Use at least one primary source and at least five secondary sources. Make copies of your paper for the class and be ready to discuss it on the night we cover your theory
