OVERVIEW
The course introduces and examines counseling
skills and methods for facilitating change and growth in individual
and group counseling situations. Learning experiences include observing,
practicing and applying facilitation techniques and methods in the
helping process. Class members will be able to identify the dynamics
of individual and group processes and display therapeutic attitudes
and behaviors in the delivery of counseling services.

The reflective practitioner will:
· Employ skills that empower clients/learner to develop self-understanding
and personal, social, academic and career competence.
· Establish rapport and develop trusting relationships with clients/learners,
including those of diverse backgrounds.
· Use principles of individual and group counseling to facilitate
adjustment, change or growth of clients/learners.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS/PROJECTS
1. Complete the Personal Change Project (Instructions
attached).
2. Videotape an individual counseling session with a classmate as
counselee.
3. Identify one individual to be your counselee. Make audio tapes
of three counseling sessions with the counselee. Secure
instructors approval of client. Have clients sign an informed consent
form. Fill out progress notes for
each session (Forms provided).
4. Observe two group counseling sessions. (Consult Resource Guides
for some area support groups.) Complete the
Group Observation Form for each group session you observe. Read the
handout on AA.
5. Provide peer coaching and feedback to class members.
6. Participate in individual and group experiences which require
the participant to:
(1) Appropriately self-disclose
(2) Share feelings
(3) Talk in a personal way about feelings
(4) Stay in the here and now
(5) Become aware of his or her own reaction to others and be able
to express this
(6) Confront with care and respect
(7) Give feedback to others
(8) Maintain confidentiality
