Meet Dick Estell

Dick Estell

Dick Estell, host and narrator of the "Radio Reader" program is heard daily on more than 100 public radio stations across the country. KVLU is proud to be the only station in Texas that airs this program.

Estell has narrated his nationally syndicated book reading program from Michigan State University's WKAR-AM/FM station since 1970 and has read over 500 books. The five-day-a-week, half-hour broadcast brings about a dozen newly published books in their entirety each year to public radio listeners.

Now retired, Estell records his program in a home studio. In addition to his radio show, Estell also reads for Books-on –Tape, Inc. In 1999, Estell was named one of the best voices of the century by AudioFile magazine.

The Radio Reader is no longer available on 91.3 KVLU-1.

On October 1, the NPR satellite system turns off its old system of feeding programs ahead of time and switches to an FTP system to make files of a program available the week it is to be broadcast. Once that happens, we will not receive Radio Reader programs in time to air the Monday program at 5:30 am. We cannot time shift with the new system, so we decided to move the Reader to KVLU 2 at noon.

Digital radios are now more available and cheaper than before. At Radiosophy.com, a model for 99.95 is a good value and gets great reception. For a little more, there is a model at Radio Shack, and Best Buy sells car radios with HD digital.
