Human Factors Lab and Ergonomics

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory (HFE Lab) is located in Lucas Engineering Building at Lamar University (LU). The LU HFE Lab is designed as a flexible facility for research on human performance, usability, comfort, stress, health, and user preference of classic, modern, and emerging work environments and is a significant contributor to the field research performed by researchers at LU.

The LU HFE Lab is equipped with oxygen analysis and heart rate analysis equipment, physiological testing equipment, human modeling software, simulation software, electromyography (EMG) equipment, manual materials handling analysis software, job/task performance and productivity assessment software, and ambient environment measuring equipment (temperature and humidity, noise, lighting).

Some research topics to date include:

1. Leading safety indicators in the marine industry

2. Cooling Suits, Physiological Response, and Task Performance in Hot Environments for the Power Industry

3. Performing Equipment Review in the Field Rather Than At the Factory (production process visual display placement)

4. Analysis of Buttock-Thigh Pressure of Five High End Ergonomic Office Chairs: A Field Study

5. Analytic Assessment of the Effect of Varying Schedules, Trade Routes and Sea States on Navigation Bridge Crew

6. A Field Investigation / Verification of Transportation Methods of Laptop Computer and Peripheral Equipment

7. Analysis of the Safety Culture in the Maritime Industry
