Scholarships
The McMaster Honors Scholarships at Lamar were instituted in 1976 in memory of Mr. and Mrs. M.W. McMaster of Beaumont . The fund was set up by their children - Catherine, Helen, Brad and Brad’s wife, Belle. This fund now supports some 70 students annually with scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,250 per semester. In addition, the Tom Jones Memorial Fund provides several thousand dollars annually for Honors scholarships. Incoming freshmen will automatically be considered for Honors Scholarships when they apply for the Honors Program. Continuing and transfer students must complete the forms provided below.
To be eligible to receive one of these scholarships, an incoming freshman must:
- achieve an SAT score of 1200 (ACT 27) or above AND rank in the top 10% of his/her high school graduating class
- submit the Honors Program application, with supplementary materials
- complete the application for admission to Lamar University
Current Lamar students and transfers must:
- have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on at least 12 hours of University academic courses
- submit the McMaster Scholarship application
- submit two faculty recommendations, on forms provided
To maintain eligibility for the McMaster and Tom Jones Honors Scholarships students must:
- maintain a GPA of at least 3.25
- agree to complete at least one Honors class each semester
- agree to collect a specified number of Honor Points each semester by performing volunteer service work and participating in University and Honors Program activities.
The priority deadline for all Honors Scholarship eligibility is February 1. Honors Scholarships are allocated by the Lamar University Honors Council. When funds are available, scholarships may also be offered on a one-semester basis or for summer classes. Announcements will be sent to all Honors students via email.
