The Lamar University
Scholars Development Program
provides preparation and guidance to those Lamar students who indicate both the desire and the general capability for graduate work.  It is expected that Lamar will select nominees for national scholarships and fellowships from among participants in the Scholars Development Program (although not exclusively, nor will all participants necessarily receive a nomination).  The Program is administered through the University Honors Program and the Honors Council.

Students selected to participate in the Scholars Development Program will enroll in the Scholars Development Seminar (HNRS 2160) after completion of at least one full semester of academic study at Lamar University.  The seminar focuses on involvement in activities that support candidacy for competitive scholarships and fellowships, as well as graduate and professional school applications.  This seminar will normally cover the following topics:

  • The nature of scholarly research.
  • Presentation and publication of student work.
  • Scholarships and fellowships availability.
  • Preparing personal statements and other application materials.
  • Personal interviews and presentations.
  • Graduate school preparation.
  • Formal etiquette.
  • Study abroad opportunities.
  • Summer programs.
  • Internships and co-operative education.

Students in the program are encouraged to pursue an area of research or creative endeavor within their major field of study.  The Seminar Director will facilitate matching each student with an appropriate faculty mentor who can guide the student’s efforts in his/her respective field.  The student also is encouraged to submit her/his work for presentation at a scholarly meeting and for inclusion in a scholarly publication.
