Honors Program Policies and Procedures
REASONS FOR REMOVAL OF A STUDENT FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM:
A student may be removed from the Honors Program for any of the following reasons:
- Failure to maintain GPA.
- Failure to enroll in Honors classes.
- Violation of the student Honor Code..
Failure to Maintain GPA:
Honors Program students are expected to maintain a GPA of 3.2 to retain active status in the Program. Each Honors Program student's grades will be reviewed at the end of each long semester.
Any student placed on academic probation by the University (GPA below 2.0) will be automatically removed from the Honors Program.
Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.2 for the first time will be placed on Honors probation. A letter will be sent informing the student of this status.
While on Honors probation, the student may enroll for no more than one Honors class per semester. Students on Honors probation may not enroll for either Honors Independent Study or Honors Thesis classes, nor may they enter into an Honors Contract. Students on Honors probation are not eligible to apply for research or study grants from the McMaster fund.
Students whose grades still fall below 3.2 (but no lower than 3.0) after one semester on Honors probation may remain on Honors probation for a second semester. If the student's GPA falls below 3.0 after one semester on Honors probation, he/she will be dropped from the Honors Program.
In either event, a letter will be sent informing the student of his/her status.
No student may remain on Honors probation for more than two long semesters in succession or three semesters in total. If the student has not recovered a 3.2 GPA at the end of these two terms (and including summer terms where appropriate), or at the end of a third semester on Honors probation regardless of sequence, he/she will be dropped from the Honors Program.
Failure to Enroll in Honors Classes:
All Honors Program students are expected to enroll in one Honors class each long semester. A student who is on track to become an Honors Program Graduate or who already has accumulated sufficient hours to be an Honors Program Graduate need not enroll in an Honors class.
Failure to enroll in Honors classes for three consecutive long semesters without approval of the Honors Director may result in removal from the Honors Program. Students in this category will be sent a letter informing them of their status.
Violation of the Student Honor Code:
- Any action that violates a provision of the Honor Code will be grounds for dismissal from the Honors Program, subsequent to review by the Student Affairs Committee of the Honors Council. The student may appeal this decision, as described below, or may subsequently apply for readmission to the Honors Program. Whenever the violation results in suspension or expulsion of the student from Lamar University , the student is not eligible for subsequent reinstatement to the Honors Program.
Appeals Procedure:
Any student who is removed from the Honors Program for one or more of the above reasons may appeal the decision in writing to the University Honors Council within 30 days of formal notification of removal. All members of the Honors Council must participate in the review of the decision being appealed. The decision of the full Honors Council is final.
