Howell H. Gwin, Jr., specializes in the study of ancient, classical, and medieval civilizations.  He has taught courses in these areas in addition to World Civilization I and American History I.  Primarily a cultural historian, his research interests include medieval medical education, medieval leprosy, and medieval art and architecture.  Dr. Gwin has published articles in several medieval and British historical encyclopedias and has compiled the General Index to the Texas Gulf Historical and Biographical Record.  Prior to his recent transition to part-time teaching, he was the longest-serving full-time faculty member on the Lamar University campus.  In August 2009, the Texas State University System Board of Regents named Dr. Gwin Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History.
