HistoryLamar University is a public institution of higher education. Its primary mission is: 1. Teaching 2. Research 3. Community and Public Service The Division of Continuing and Distance Education primarily administers the community and public service programs at Lamar University. On September 1, 1993, Lamar University established an outreach, off campus program. The purpose of the program is to empower individuals and families in low-to-moderate income communities of Southeast Texas. The program is currently working to empower residents in the following communities: Beaumont, West Oakland/Pear Orchard Community, North End Community and Charlton Pollard.
