The Division of Continuing Education

The Division of Continuing Education is based primarily upon the University’s Instructional Mission and Service Mission Statements, with some research opportunities available. The Division of Continuing Education is composed of six departments: Administration, Center for Adult Studies, Center for Industrial Fire and Hazardous Materials, Non-Credit Programs, Special Programs and Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum. Each department has a mission statement and followed by specific strategies and tasks as part of the overall divisional strategic plan. The departmental and divisional strategic plans are based upon applicable University objectives and related strategies as outlined in the Lamar University Strategic and Academic Plans.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Division of Continuing Education is to promote life-long learning by extending the resources of Lamar University to the Southeast Texas region, the state, the nation and in some instances, internationally. Self-supporting programs will build on the strengths and expertise of Lamar University faculty, academic departments, colleges, and community content specialists. Course offerings are contemporary, and competitive. The Division of Continuing Education develops and presents a diverse program of credit and non-credit continuing education offerings that are responsive to the professional/career development, human resource development and personal enrichment needs of individuals as well as business and industry. The Division of Continuing Education positions Lamar University as a regional leader in distance learning. The Division of Continuing Education provides a program of public service activities that respond to unique regional education needs and cultural interests.

The Division of Continuing Education consists of a variety of disciplines, all providing various continuing education opportunities. The Division’s role within the University is to provide alternative educational options, to service the non-traditional student, and conduct training opportunities to business, to industry and to the community. There are also some unique research opportunities through various departmental projects. The Division of Continuing Education is the only authorized CEU (continuing education unit) provider for the university, maintaining proper credentials, meeting national CEU standards and documentation for each workshop conducted. The Division of Continuing Education is the sole provider for Lamar University of community outreach and public service programming. Because all divisional services rendered are educationally and academically based, it is important for the Division to report to the Executive Director of Academic Affairs and maintain its position within the academic portion of the university.
