Graduate Council

The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in Room 219D, Wimberly Building at 3:00 pm. Dr. Oney Fitzpatrick, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided. Council members Drs. Kelley, Saur, Lin, Culbertson, and Coordinator of Graduate Studies Carmen Breaux attended.
MINUTES:
Minutes of the November 2007 meetings were approved.
OLD BUSINESS:
Revised Course Addition for INEN 5354
The Council reviewed and unanimously approved INEN 5354.
NEW BUSINESS:
Graduate Advising
Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Council to remind faculty that the Thesis 5390 course must be taken first and all subsequent registrations are for 5391. In no case should 5390 and 5391 be taken in the same semester. Dr. Culbertson requested that the Graduate Office research implementing restrictions in the new Banner system to prevent this and report back to the Graduate Council.
Syllabi Guide
The Council discussed dual-level courses. Syllabi must show a clear distinction between graduate and undergraduate level courses. Council will review and address at the next meeting.
Course Additions/Changes
1. CHEM 5361 & CHEM 5321 course additions were unanimously approved pending revisions to student learning outcomes and academic dishonesty and disability disclaimers.
2. Course additions FCSC 5332, 5302, 5333, 5335, 5348, 5349, 5352, 5353 and course changes to FCSC 5304, 5305, 5321, 5325, 5329 were unanimously approved pending revisions to student learning outcomes.
Graduate Faculty Applications
G-4s were submitted by Harold P. Glasscock, Ray Coxe, James L. True, Gleb V. Tcheslavski, and Faith P. Wallace. Graduate Council approved all of them.

Other
Qualified students entering Lamar from the East China Institute will not be required to pay the graduate application fee of $75.
Council asked that the Graduate Office send a memo to all graduate departments requesting that they review SACS guidelines for syllabi.
