Dance Mission Statement![]() The Dance Division strives for excellence within the discipline by providing quality instruction in dance technique, composition, and pedagogy. In doing so, it prepares dance majors for a variety of professional careers, including performance, choreography, and public school and studio teaching. The broad-based curriculum, which combines technical competencies with creative and artistic sensibilities, also serves the educational needs of non-majors in elective studies, and general students as part of their understanding of the arts. The Dance Division supports faculty and student research and creative activity that is nationally and internationally competitive. Through interaction with other university programs, community groups, and professional organizations, the Dance Division serves to enhance the cultural environment of the University, the community and the state.
This mission statement is consistent with those of the College, University and Texas State University System.

History of Lamar Dance
Dance, in the form of folk dance, first appeared on the Lamar campus in the 1950s as part of the Physical Education department. In 1965, Program Director Rebecca 0. Hill and Department Chair Belle Mead Holm added tap, ballet and modern dance to the Lamar course offerings. The dance program grew quickly, and, in 1973, Lamar established its dance major. A performing group, called the Cardinal Dancers (now the Lamar Dance Company), was also added at this time. In the late 1980s, Department Chair Alice Bell established a teacher certification degree. In 1998, the dance program moved from the College of Education to the College of Fine Arts and Communication. The program now offers three dance major degree plans, a dance minor and numerous dance classes available to non-majors. To schedule an audition appointment:
