Speech Language Pathology Clinic

The Lamar University Speech Pathology Clinic exists to provide speech, language and dysphagia evaluations and therapy to assist in the remediation of communication delays or disorders. The clinic is located on the corner of Rolfe Christopher Drive and Iowa Street. Application for evaluations can be obtained by calling (409) 880-8171. An initial speech and language diagnostic will be scheduled. Evaluating personnel will determine the need for treatment.

Personnel:

Our Speech Clinic is part of the training program in Speech Pathology at Lamar University. All diagnosis and therapy is closely supervised by clinical staff who are certified by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and are licensed to practice in Texas.

Age Group:

All children, adolescents and adults are welcome.

Description of Diagnostic and Treatment Services

Our assessments are typically two-hour sessions in which all aspects of communicative function are examined. Family members are active participants in the assessment process. We provide recommendations and assist families in the clinical process.

Because we are a training facility, most treatment sessions occur two times per week for approximately one hour. This varies according to the needs of the client.

Lamar University Special Clinical Programs

ESL Program

Lamar University is fortunate to have a rich, multicultural environment. The accents of the speakers around us reflect the unique characteristics and background of our students, faculty, and community. However, some people have difficulty communicating because of their accent. These difficulties may include:

  • Not being understood
  • Avoiding social interactions
  • Frustration
  • People focusing on the accent more than the speaker

The ESL Program is designed for non-native speakers of English and/or speakers of a dialectal variety of American English, to modify oral communication skills.

Summer Language Enrichment Program

The Summer Language Enrichment Program for children with language disorders, autism, and/or developmental delays may be candidates for this program.

  • The Pre-K/Kindergarten program (children approximately 4-6 years of age) focuses on literacy, language, and social interaction.
  • The Elementary Age Program (children approximately 7-10 years of age) focuses on oral/written language and social interaction.

Both programs are twice a week for seven weeks. Children are seen in groups of three and each group includes a typically developing peer. We conduct an informal assessment prior to the initiation of the program for purposes of group assignment and treatment planning. We have limited enrollment.

ACT-Achievement through Collaboration

ACT-Achievement through Collaboration is an innovative program designed to 1) decrease the achievement gap in children with special needs by collaborative teaming between a university speech-language program (LU) and special education services in a regional public school (PAISD); and 2) prepare graduate students in speech-language pathology in “best-practice” methods for delivering speech-language pathology services in the public schools. If you are interested in how our clinic participated with PAISD contact Dr. Monica L. Harn at 409-880-8174.
