Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences: Home

The ability to communicate with family, friends and community is a valuable gift. A speech or hearing impairment can affect all aspects of the affected individual’s life. Through the study of Speech and Hearing Sciences, our students obtain the skills to prevent, diagnose, monitor and treat communication disorders as audiologists and speech-language pathologists

Degree Programs

  • Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders
  • Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Doctor of Audiology

  • Our graduate degree programs are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

    Career Opportunities
There has been a significant national shortage of speech-language pathologists and audiologists for many years. Consequently, the job market has been excellent and usually 100 percent of our graduates find employment within their profession.

Our graduates work in a wide variety of medical, rehabilitation and educational settings, including hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, physicians’ offices, nursing homes, schools and early childhood centers. In addition, some of our graduates work in private practices and others have pursued a career in research by pursuing Ph.D.

    Facilities
The faculty in Speech and Hearing Sciences at Lamar includes outstanding researchers and expert clinicians. Our on-campus Speech and Hearing Clinic provides students with excellent training opportunities. We have state-of-the-art technology with digital video and audio recording capabilities for testing hearing in infants and for analyzing speech and voice quality.

Our extensive network of off-campus externship sites includes nationally renowned medical centers in the Houston area.
