Who Will Be My Teachers?A native of Los Angeles, Nick Rissman studied with Jean Eichelberger Ivey and Vladimir Ussachevsky at The Peabody Conservatory (BM), and Maurice Wright at Temple University (DMA). Nick Rissman's compositions have been performed internationally at such venues as the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, The Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, and by such ensembles as The Network for New Music. Commissions include those by such artists as Don Liuzzi, Timpanist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, violinist Chantal Juillet and horn/percussion duo John and Lynn Beck. The Bell Hop, an electronic installation, received thousands of performances from 1996-1998 at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas. He has written articles for the "Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy" and "Opera Journal". Rissman is Coordinator of Composition & Theory at Lamar, as well as director of Industiral Carillon. Principal teachers were Aaron Copland, Peter Mennin, Henri Lazarof, David Ward-Steinman and Henry Mancini. His Works have received numerous prizes including First Prize in the International Composers Competition, Trieste, Italy, the "Oscar Espla" prize,Alicante, and NEA Composer Fellowship, and 20 consecutive ASCAP awards. His works have been performed by the San Antonio Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. He has appeared as Saxophone soloist with numerous bands and orchestras throughout the United States. He is Chair of the Department of Music, Theatre & Dance, Lamar University.
