The University Press

The Lamar student newspaper, the University Press, has been one of the most frequently honored papers for student journalism in the history of the Southwestern Journalism Congress (SWJC). Th UP has averaged 24 distinguished awards every year since 1976 in competitions with 18 other large university journalism programs in the four-state area of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas

Mr. Howard Perkins has been the director of the University Press since 1976. Mr. Andy Coughlan, Assistant to the Director, joined Mr. Perkins in 1993.

In an unprecedented move by the SWJC at its annual convention in 2001, Mr. Perkins was honored with a permanent scholarship. The Howard A. Perkins Scholarship is awarded annually by SWJC to journalism students who meet the criteria of promise and ability in the profession.

Part of university student publications, under the Division of Student Affairs, the University Press is published twice weekly during long terms. The Student Publications Advisory Board serves as the principle advisory body for the University Press.
