Communication Clubs and Organizations

Students gain practical experience at Lamar University in many ways including their involvement in active student organizations like the Professional Communication Association PCA provides a service to students in the communication department by setting up a career network with its alumni, promoting national and professional contact, and providing assistance to freshmen. Dr. Mary Alice Baker is the faculty sponsor for PCA.

Another popular student group in the department is the Lamar Filmmakers Association, a group dedicated to providing for the professional development of its membership and to offering a social outlet to all interested in film. Professor O'Brien Stanley is the faculty sponsor for the group.

The Lamar University Speech Team, sponsored by Dr. Baker, provides for the professional development of its membership and offers a social outlet for all students interested in public speaking and competition.

For students interested in classical films there is the Fine Arts Film Society, sponsored by Dr. Lane Roth. The organization provides opportunity to view, discuss and interpret classical films.

Students majoring in communication are also eligible to join the Press Club of Southeast Texas, an organization for professionals in the news media and public relations. As student affiliates, communication majors can benefit from many aspects of the organization including networking and professional development. The Press Club also sponsors an annual student scholarship within the department

Students interested in advertising and marketing may find benefit in joining as student members of the Advertising Federation of Southeast Texas, an association of marketing and advertising professionals.
