Communication Department Broadcasting

Broadcasting at Lamar University

The Department of Communication at Lamar University offers courses in broadcasting and media studies. This program is designed to give the student background in both analysis and hands-on experience. Our department affords freshmen experience working with professional quality equipment, a rarity at other universities. We encourage our students to get as much hands-on experience as possible while they are at Lamar.

A student majoring in broadcasting builds on a core of departmental curriculum consisting of ten specific courses within the department (30 hours). From introductory courses in broadcasting and film production, the student moves on to courses like corporate video production, television production, TV writing and performing, and television field production. Theory courses add breadth to the program, including TV & Film Genre, Psychology of TV and Film, and Film Theory. Throughout the program, there is a dual emphasis on both solid knowledge and practical application: you do what you learn, and you learn by doing

Many active programs of Lamar University Television, LUTV, are broadcast on local cable television. Student programming is the forte of LUTV; from newscasts to special productions, student-conceived shows are written, performed, edited and broadcast by students.

Through the opportunities available with KVLU FM 91.3 Member Supported Gulf Coast Radio, Lamar students can gain practical experience in radio production and broadcasting. The National Public Radio affiliate station broadcasts a wide array of quality programming in response to the preferences of its supporting audience. The station is located in Room 222 of the University Theatre building.
