Department of Communication
Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Communication at Lamar University!
The Department of Communication opens the door for exciting careers in advertising, broadcasting, corporate communication, film,
journalism and public relations. The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in communication. Students build a variety of
communication skills in areas such as interpersonal communication, communication theory, public speaking and media writing.
Each student
must complete a required 30-hour departmental core curriculum of 10 courses. Students complete additional courses in communication for their
specific career interests. In addition to quality academic instruction, Lamar students have opportunity to participate in internships in a
variety of work settings across the nation. Students may also gain real-world experience on the staff of KVLU-FM 91.3 member-supported
public radio, or by working with Lamar's student-run television station, LUTV, which broadcasts a variety of student-created programming on
local cable. Our award-winning biweekly student newspaper, the University
Press, provides excellent opportunities for journalism majors.
Our alums are busy everywhere in the media!
Student organizations like the Professional Communication Association, the Lamar Advertising Federation, the Southeast Texas Association of Black Journalists, the Fine Arts Film Society and the Lamar Filmmakers Association provide
additional opportunities to develop skills and build friendships and networks. Students are encouraged to join the Press Club of Southeast
Texas, a regional association of media and public relations professionals, and to submit and present papers at regional and national
communication association
conferences. The Spindletop/Lamar University Film Festival is sponsored by the department and offers a unique focus on student and
independent film and video.
