Art Department: Home

Welcome to the Department of Art at Lamar University!

The Department of Art provides an environment designed to nurture artistic, academic and personal growth in our students. Through its curricula and community outreach the department prepares the student for a professional career in the discipline with courses in both practice and theory. In a time when the visual arts are undergoing rapid change, the department maintains a balance between its own traditions and the unknown challenges of the future, between skill building and theoretical insights. Educational, cultural, and academic opportunities are made available so that each student might reach his or her full potential and participate in those human experiences and qualities inherent in the fine arts. Building on a legacy of quality teaching, the faculty of the Department of Art is actively involved in scholarly and creative activities, serving as a model of commitment to excellence.

Specific areas of study include: painting, animation, fibers, art history, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, electronic media, web design, cast metal, video editing, digital fine art photography, weaving, sculpture, etching, graphic design, surface design, photography, printmaking, illustration, computer graphics and lithography.

Images and visual communication continue to increase in cultural importance globally. Likewise, the ability to create, assess and effectively employ visual art and design skills becomes more and more essential for success in a variety of fields.

Our students are prepared for professional careers in their chosen discipline by enhancing technical skills and refining aesthetic judgment through in-depth study in the studio along with participation in diverse community outreach and pre-professional opportunities.

Lamar University Department of Art graduates enjoy careers in studio art, education, museums, galleries, publishing, architecture, advertising, computer graphics, arts administration and more.
