Blackboard
Blackboard is an integrated set of web-based tools for course management and delivery. It was built by educators at the University of British Columbia as a tool to allow other educators to build sophisticated web-based learning environments without a lot of time, resources or technical expertise. And to allow any student who knows how to navigate the WWW to be able to participate in an online class. It may be used both in a distance learning setting (completely web-based) and as a supplement to lecture-based courses.
Faculty Development Center
The faculty technology center, an initiative of Lamar University and the Center for Distance Education, provides resources that support and encourage faculty to understand, explore, and design ways of effectively integrating technology into teaching and learning in the classroom. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00 and by appointment.
Training
Training on various software and hardware will be available to faculty in several formats. One-on-one assistance will be available by appointments in the Faculty Technology Lab. Tutorials from workshops presented by the CDE staff can be viewed online or downloaded. Workshops will be offered on a regular basis in the Faculty Classroom. All classes will be limited to 12 participants. Some training will be available from outside consultants and other sessions will be provided by staff. Small group sessions will be available for hardware and some software packages in the Faculty Technology Lab. These sessions will be for 2-5 participants. The center also provides a 2.5 day workshop to give you the tools necessary to create a successful online course using WebCT.
