Preprofessional Scholarships
List Of Scholarships Mamie McFadden Ward Premedical Scholarships: Awarded to seven incoming freshmen on a competitive basis (GPA, SAT score, and class standing). The awards are given to students majoring in nursing, allied health, premedical and psychology. Awards are for $500 for a semester and can be renewed. The scholarship can amount to $4,000 over a four year period if the student maintains the academic standards necessary for acceptance to medical school. The scholarship was originally funded by Mrs. Ward as 2 gifts of $250,000 each. Harry Starr Scholarship: Awarded to Junior and Senior premedical students. Recipients must plan to attend a medical school within the state of Texas, natural -born U.S. citizen, and be full-time status with high academic standing. Priority is given to those demonstrating the greatest financial need. The scholarship was established by Mrs. Doris Starr in loving memory of her husband, Harry Starr, Beaumont's first neurosurgeon. Edwin Hayes Scholarship: Awarded to the outstanding Senior level premedical student. The scholarship was originally established in 1974 to honor Dean Hayes. In 1977, the Hayes family requested that the scholarship funds of both parents, Dorothy and Edwin Hayes, be consolidated into a single scholarship. Greenberg Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding Senior level premedical student. The scholarship was established by Mrs. Hester P. Greenberg in memory of Dr. Philip B. Greenberg and is perpetuated by his sons, Dr. S. Donald Greenberg and Mr. S. Louis Greenberg. Dr. Greenberg was active for 35 years in Beaumont and the surrounding area as an ear, nose and throat specialist. He also actively support Lamar University . Jefferson County Medical Society Premedical Scholarship: Awarded to one premedical student. Awards are $1000 ($500/semester). The recipient must maintain at least 12 hours of course work per semester, be registered as a Preprofessional major with the University, make steady progress towards the completion of the preprofessional prerequisites, and maintain a GPA which, in the judgment of the Preprofessional Committee will be competitive for application to professional school. The award was founded in 1986 in memory of Joe Trum. Vinson Scholarship: Awarded to Preveterinary students. Award was founded in December, 1999, by Lyla Henry in memory of her aunt and uncle, Martha and Haldane Vinson.
