It offers a consideration of the human systems in a less chemical approach that is less threatening to non-majors. He has developed a laboratory manual to accompany the lecture, Focus on Biology , published by Kendall-Hunt.

Biology 1406 and 1407  General Biology I and II. The beginning college course for majors and those planning to enter a professional school.  In collaboration with professors Jed Ramsey and Richard Harrel, a laboratory manual, Laboratory Investigations in Biology, has been written for this course sequence. It is also published through Kendall-Hunt and has been revised through several editions.

Biology 2420  Microbiology : A consideration of the harmful and beneficial impact of microorganisms on humans and other organisms. This course serves biology and pre-professional students and also large numbers of students hoping to enter the allied health sciences, including nursing.

Biology 4420 Entomology : A senior/graduate course which covers the insects and their allies. A collection of local insects is completed as a part of the laboratory.

Biology 5100 Materials and Techniques of Research : An introduction to graduate study, includes an introduction to the graduate faculty and their research interests.

Biology 5110 Graduate Seminar : Topics vary each semester includes student presentations and group discussions.

Biology courses taught in the past or rarely taught:

Biology 130: a general education non-majors course.

Biology 4300 Undergraduate Problems: an undergraduate  research course.

Biology/Psychology 4301 Biology and Psychology of Human Sexuality : A team-taught course covering two perspectives to the same subject.

Biology 530 Graduate Seminar in Biological Sciences. Primarily oriented for in-service teachers. Updates on major topics and applications for teaching biology in the classroom.

Biology 669 A&B Thesis. Supervision of a master’s thesis.

Academic Advising:

Dr. Warren advises and prepares degree plans for biology majors.

He also serves on the Preprofessional Advisory Committee and advises students intending to enter a  professional school. Members of this committee also evaluate applicants and write letters of recommendation to professional schools. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physician’s Assistant majors are also advised by Dr,. Warren.

Professional Activity:

Most recent activities have included the construction of several interactive science exhibits. The concept of these types of demonstrations were modeled after those developed at the Exploratorium  in San Francisco, where Dr. Warren had a short term internship. The exhibits he has developed at Lamar are housed in room 103 of the biology building and are used in presentations to school groups both on Lamar’s campus and performances delivered in the schoolroom.

A second area of service activities is the planning and delivery of science related meetings. Meetings include the Texas Academy of Science state meeting at Lamar  in 1989, the Conferences for the Advancement of Science Teaching at Lamar in 1994, the Second Big Thicket Conference (held at the University of Houston) and two meetings of the Texas Conferences on Undergraduate education in the Biological Sciences (both held at Lamar)

A third major thrust is in a leadership role in the Council of Instructional Departments. He has been President for five terms and also held numerous other offices in this department chair’s organization. He is the senior department chair on the Lamar campus.

Dr.  Warren is regionally recognized for his weekly radio program, " The Occasional Scientist" on KVLU-FM.
