Stuart Gordon
Stuart
Gordon has worked as director/ screenwriter/ producer in Hollywood
for decades, with projects ranging from "Honey I Shrunk the
Kids" to the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation "The Re-Animator."
"Re-Animator" received outstanding reviews from critics
nationwide and won a Critic's Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
This cult filmmaker first gained notoriety in his senior year at
the University of Wisconsin for staging an unorthodox version of
"Peter Pan." Gordon went on to form the Organic Theatre
in 1969, and oversaw dozens of unique plays, including work by David
Mamet. As Organic's artistic director, Gordon helped nurture the
talents of a number of actors and playwrights who went on to realize
successful stage and screen careers, including Joe Mantegna, Dennis
Franz, Andre De Shields and Mamet.
Gordon left the theater in 1983 and made his film debut with "Re-Animator"
in (1985), noted by some reviews as a "deliriously grotesque
(but very funny) adaptation" of H.P. Lovecraft. This was the
first of six Lovecraft adaptation directed by Gordon, which received
commercial and critical success.
After "Re-Animator," Gordon returned to Lovecraft again
for "From Beyond" (1986), then tackled murderous dolls
in "Dolls" (1987), post-apocalyptic fighting machines
in "Robot Jox" (1990), a graphic retelling of "The
Pit and the Pendulum" (1991), and a high-tech futuristic prison
in "Fortress" (1993). Gordon also co-wrote the story of
"Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" (1989) and was co-executive
producer on its sequel, "Honey, I Blew Up the Kid" (1992).
Gordon's film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's short story "The
Wonderful Ice Cream Suit," was backed by Disney, starring Joe
Mantegna and Edward James Olmos.
