The Department of English and Modern Languages emphasizes excellent teaching in a variety of languages and literatures.  The English Department offers a full spectrum of literature courses:  from Shakespeare to Langston Hughes, from old and middle English to Texas literature, from literary criticism to film criticism.  The English Department offers a variety of Writing Courses:  technical writing, fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and rhetoric.  The English Department also offers pedagogical courses in literature and writing. 

The department offers a Bachelors of Arts (with and without teacher certification) and a Master of Arts degree in English.  The department now offers a Bachelors of Arts in English with a Writing Concentration. 

The department also offers Bachelors degrees in French and Spanish, including teacher certification, as well as two years of German. The 12-hour supplementary certification in ESL is also available.

Philosophy is housed in this department, offering a minor.  Minors are also available in French, Spanish, and Writing. 

Pulse, Review of Texas Books, and The Lamar Journal of the Humanities are housed in the Department.

The Department and the Writing Center offer English and Modern Language majors jobs as tutors, classroom assistants, proofreaders, and technical assistants.
