STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
B.A. in ENGLISH
Outcome 1
Advanced students in the Lamar University B. A. in English program will demonstrate the ability to write purposefully within the discipline for an educated audience.
Outcome 2
Advanced students in the Lamar University B. A. in English program will demonstrate considerable skill in focused literary criticism and research.
Outcome 3
Advanced students in the Lamar University B. A. in English program will demonstrate knowledge of literature, literary history, and literary theory comparable to that of graduates from other programs as nationally compiled.
Outcome 4 (optional)
Outcome 4 applies only to students who pursue teacher certification in English Language Arts and Reading 8-12.
Advanced students in the Lamar University B. A. in English program with teacher certification are expected to perform well both on the Lamar Local Subject Area Exam in English and on the state TExES certification exam for English Language Arts and Reading 8-12.
M.A. in English
Outcome 1
Students in the M. A. in English program will demonstrate a high-level of proficiency in written literary analysis.
Outcome 2
Students in the M.A. in English program will demonstrate a high-level of proficiency in literary research and synthesis of research.
Outcome 3
Students in the M. A. in English program will be aware of the professional leadership opportunities that await them and the ethical standards, particularly in academe, to which they will be held. Graduate students will be assessed by means of the following rubric: (A) Awareness of further professional and academic opportunities for employment; (B) clear understanding of the ethical standards and integrity to which they will be held in professional activities; (C) Awareness of the necessity for meeting deadlines and other obligations to which one is assigned; (D) Being respectful of the professional working environment.
Outcome 4 (optional)
Outcome 4 applies only to graduate students who submit either technical or creative theses for completion of the master’s degree.
In sample proposals, essays, stories, or poems, students in the M. A. in English program will demonstrate high-level, professional proficiency in the use of literary or rhetorical techniques associated with the genre.
Outcome 5 (optional)
Outcome 5 applies only to graduate students who select the 36-credit hour option and who thus must pass a comprehensive oral exam.
Graduate students will demonstrate a high-level of critical thinking and oral proficiency throughout the duration of the oral examination.
Outcome 6 (optional)
Outcome 6 applies only to graduate teaching assistant who are the instructors of record for developmental writing, DWRT-0371.
Graduate teaching assistants in the M. A. in English program will demonstrate a high-level of teaching effectiveness that is consistent with departmental expectations.
Outcome 5 (optional)
Outcome 5 applies only to students who pursue a writing concentration (12-18 hours) within the 30-hour major.
In sample proposals, essays, stories, or poems, advanced students in the B. A. in English program will demonstrate a high-level of proficiency in the use of literary or rhetorical techniques associated with the genre.
B.A in SPANISH
Outcome 1
Advanced students in the Lamar University B.A. in Spanish, and the B.A. in Spanish with Teacher Certification program will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish in an oral manner.
Outcome 2
Advanced students in the Lamar University B.A. in Spanish, and the B.A. in Spanish with Teacher Certification program will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish in written form.
Outcome 3
Advanced students in the Lamar University B.A. in Spanish, and the B.A. in Spanish with Teacher Certification program will develop critical thinking skills and apply them successfully to the analysis of Hispanic literature. Students will study and analyze literary genres and movements, philosophical trends, political, historical, cultural and economic environments to which the authors and literature selections pertain.
Outcome 4
(Optional)
Students in the B.A. in Spanish and B.A. in Spanish with Teacher Certification Program will be exposed - by various means- to the civilizations and culture of Spain or Latin America (depending on the course being offered) in order to develop a cultural awareness of the Hispanic World.
Outcome 5
(Optional)
Students completing the B.A. in Spanish with Teacher Certification Program will demonstrate knowledge pertaining to: second language acquisition theories, current teaching methodologies, integration of technology in the classroom, and the application of different techniques and approaches to second language teaching.
B.A. in French
Outcome 1
Students will engage in meaningful oral communication in French.
Outcome 2
Students will read and write effectively in French.
Outcome 3
Students will apply critical skills, literary and research methods to analyze works of literature.
Outcome 4
Students will demonstrate the ability to think analytically about the French-speaking world (France and Francophone countries).
